This out-of-print book is a collection of essays that challenge the false notion that civilization came to California only after the establishment of the Spaniard Franciscan Mission system in the second half of the 1700’s. This, in spite of the fact that archeological data shows humans living in the region for 13,000 years. Various chapters challenge the assumptions of Eurocentric historical lens and cite recorded data and research to deconstruct the various biased premises that have interfered with our appreciations of the full wisdom of the first peoples here, including diversified crop cultivation, metallurgy, trade and a multitude of self-sustaining customs in developed over thousands of years, in balance with both a diverse population and nature itself.

This is a must-read for all people living in California. The history of this area of the world is much richer than we have been taught.
